If you work in automotive locksmithing or electronic repair, you know the dread of a “dead” key. Whether it’s been through a washing machine or crushed in a car door, sometimes the standard OBD or coil-reading methods just won’t cut it.
To solve this, KEYDIY is set to release the KD-13 Chip Reading Adapter. Designed to work seamlessly with the KD-X4 and KD-MAX, this tool is built for the “worst-case scenarios” where the PCB is beyond saving, but the data is still alive.
What is the KD-13 Adapter?
The KD-13 is a specialized adapter board designed for desoldered chip reading. It allows technicians to remove the chip from a damaged 5C or 5D key and place it directly onto a stable reading platform.

Key Features at a Glance
- Specialised for 5C & 5D Chips: Perfect for the latest generation of keys that require precise data extraction.
- Rescue Damaged Hardware: Specifically engineered for keys with water damage or physical PCB fractures.
- Multi-Package Support: The board features various onboard chip footprints, ensuring it fits common chip packages found in modern vehicles.
- Stable Connection: Unlike using “flying wires” or shaky probes, the KD-13 offers a locked-in, stable connection to prevent data corruption during the read/write process.
- Ecosystem Integration: Fully compatible with the KEYDIY KD-MAX and KD-X4 handsets.

Why Need This
In the UK, we deal with a high volume of water-damaged keys (thanks to our lovely weather!). Traditionally, recovering data from a corroded board meant tedious soldering or expensive replacement procedures.
The KD-13 simplifies this “bench work.” By desoldering the chip and using the adapter, you bypass the damaged circuitry entirely. It’s faster, safer for the data, and significantly increases your “save” rate for customers who have lost their only key.
How it Fits Into Your Workflow
When a customer brings in a non-functional 5C or 5D key, you can now:
- Diagnose: Use the KD-MAX to confirm the coil isn’t reading.
- Extract: Desolder the chip from the damaged board.
- Recover: Place the chip on the KD-13 Adapter, connect to your KD-X4/MAX, and pull the data for a fresh transponder or remote.
How to use KEYDIY KD X4 and KD-13 Adapter to read 5C/5D Chip?
1.Take out the chip from original 5C/5D, and solder the chip to the KD-13 5C/5D adapter.

2. Connect the KD 13 adapter with KEYDIY KD X4.

3. Start KD X4 software>>IMMO Programming>>VW>>5c/5d immobilizer system

Read key, has two ways, read on original car, or read original key.

Read OK, and Service password, then can do immo programming.

The Verdict
The KD-13 isn’t just a luxury; for any serious shop offering advanced key cloning and repair, it’s a necessary recovery tool. It bridges the gap between a “broken key” and a “happy customer.”
The adapter will be released soon. Stay tuned!
